It has been cumulative over days. I'll evaluate
(garbage-collect)
every day for several days and see whether RMAIL deletions slow down.
I think you need not bother to test this, because the answer is clear.
Emacs certainly collects garbage many times each day.
You might try killing the Rmail buffer and visiting the file again,
in the old session. Does this make it get fast again?
