Here is one crack, the 48x48 version and a 16x16 version. BTW if anyone want to play with this some of the Gimp xcf files are at the same directory as the images for the web page.
The logo is OK, as a logo (like the Nike swoosh). If it became known to everyone _as a logo_, then it could work as an icon too. But both the E and the gnu are unrecognizable _in the icon_ (16x16). IOW, if we want the icon to stand on its own, not backed up by lots of "branding" with the larger logo, then it must be recognizable on its own.
