Rasmus, thanks for the suggestions. However, your email has highlighted the fact that the font(s) I use do not have proper coverage of unicode characters! :-( I wonder which font you use? I typically use DejaVu and Terminus but also Lucida. None of these can display most of the characters you suggested unfortunately.
