Ok that is very similar to what I have 21.5.50 and Kubuntu 10.04. I run
auto-capitalize without any problem.

I am now completely confused. Did kill emacs and started emacs -Q?
Did you set debug-on-error to t?
Did you load auto-capitalize manually
and did you turn it on?

This is not clear to me.
