Ok. I found out what I did differently from you. You said: 7. Execute macro 4 times by typing C-x e e e e while I simply used <F4> binding. Your variant indeed does not work because C-x e == <F4>, while subsequent e e e are just "e" "e" "e" triggering effort in speed keys. It does not trigger any macro.
