Or not, when the number of previews is huge.

(I personally do believe that subtree preview would make more sense, but
not from maintainer perspective)

Previews are currently acting on section, not subtree. Both for latex
and image previews.

The reasonable compromise is a user option.
(One day, I may find more time to push on
https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/877c7v7dbn.fsf@localhost/ to allow
multiple sets of defaults)
