I think, the explicit link to the manual (info "(org) Protocols") should be in the very beginning as the primary source of information along with comments in the package file (M-x finder-commentary RET org-protocol RET). E.g. recently ";void(0)" has been added to bookmarklets due to some changes in Firefox behavior.
Updates to the manual version published on gnu.org should be clearly marked. P.S. I have added the "manual" tag to the subject.
