I sometimes reach it with simple (goto-char ...).
Or via sparse tree (as described in the manual).

You are right, it will indeed reveal more than just context around point.
By default, it will reveal lineage above (if it is not already
displayed).

Also, playing with org-inside-toggle-hidden, I noticed that it does not
work when org-inside-mode is disabled. I think it could be useful as a
standalone command as well.
