Related-to: https://list.orgmode.org/[email protected]/T/#t The most recent iteration involves subtle hints whether cursor is inside or outside the emphasis (face/cursor shape/revealing markers - all customizeable, revealing markers is not the default). AFAIK, org-emphasize currently supports toggling emphasis in active region.
