My current workflow isn't amazing though. Bastien's GNAW
package is very wonderful and helpful.
I use gnus but it has some serious performance issues when
dealing with this many emails. I should probably switch to
mu4e or something but that's going to be a whole thing.
You know that I use notmuch. Last time I refreshed my db, I got
831845 emails. As notmuch states it, "it is not much mail". I
can search everything via notmuch.el at typing speed. I think
gnus has notmuch search backend, although I did not try it as I
prefer the notmuch UI style.
I would love to be able to search emails. gnus has serious issues
that go pretty deep though.
gnus doesn't even have enough performance for it to handle my
personal mail in maildir form which forced me to setup icedove
locally to serve emails to gnus over a local IMAP server. Just
opening a mailbox with 5000 emails to list out all the subject
lines would take 15+ seconds and freeze all of emacs.
Although right now I seem to be unable to reproduce some of those
performance issues so maybe I need to revisit this.
In order to improve performance I'm actually running a modified
version of gnus which is probably not a good idea. Trying to
prove my modifications are correct and then upstreaming them would
be a lot of effort. There is currently no test suite for gnus at
all.
tldr: Right now I can open an entire thread (although it takes
like 5 seconds to pull all the relevant emails). I'm not able to
do broad searches (even by simple meta-data like author or date).
Also I'm running experimental changes that means there might be
subtle errors with my mail.
Ya I'm not a good spot right now when it comes to mail...
but maybe this mail was sent with format=flowed which would be
cool. I'm experimenting with that
