For future reference and anyone reading this in the future, you can still use org-latex-preview by generating PNG images instead of SVG, with (setq org-latex-preview-process-default 'dvipng) On older versions of Org mode, from before the LaTeX preview rewrite, that would be (setq org-preview-latex-default-process 'dvipng) While PNG previews are not as versatile (blurry when zooming in, don't respect Emacs theme changes), they are generated much faster than SVG so you get closer to real-time feedback with org-latex-preview-mode turned on.
