Indeed -- when you set the background, it is the foreground of the
sample that shows you the color.  Perhaps face color samples should
just be a box of the selected color as background (also for the
foreground).  

But I don't have a clue to how one would persuade custom to do that
[looking at the custom/widget code causes my brain deadlock]

Don't be sorry.  As a result of your report, I found that cua's faces
were defined in a very obscure way -- I fixed that to use standard
face inheritance.
