If you look at the change logs, you could probably tell what happened.
The only mention in the changelogs is from 1990:

(x_error_handler): Use XDefaultIOError.
* screen.c (Ffocus_screen): New subr, removed Fscreen_has_focus.
(Fselect_screen): New, optional parameter no_enter.
(Frestore_screen_configuration):
(Fdelete_screen): Pass second parm Qnil to Fselect_screen.
* window.c (Fdisplay_buffer, Fset_window_configuration): Pass
second parm Qnil to Fselect_screen.
screen.c is apparently not even in the Attic any more.
