And for what it's worth, I'll reiterate that I agree with you.  It's good to
fix make-mode so it highlights more correctly (parses the various funny
constructs more precisely), but it doesn't have to come at the cost of
making the whole thing illegible because of an overload of clashing colors.
I don't know about other people, but for myself I can instantaneously tell
the difference between $@ and $TOTO without any additional highlighting and
highlighting them differently doesn't help me read the rest of the code more
quickly either.
