I do. It would be impossible for xterm to figure out all varaiables invented by other terminal emulators, such as rxvt, and arrange for
    them not to be inherited.

It would be easy for xterm to arrange that COLORTERM not be inherited.

There's no reason to refuse to solve a specific real problem just
because we don't see a way to solve all imaginable similar problems.


Well, just because it is easy does not make it the right thing to do. I am not an xterm developer, but I would question why xterm would have to take one specific environment variable it to account, invented by another terminal emulator, to solve a potential problem in Emacs. Also, this is not xterm specific, how about the Gnome and KDE terminal emulators? HP at one point also had an X terminal emulator. Should these also be modified to handle this specific problem?
