It is obscure. Press Ctrl-l when the file dialog is visible to get the
location popup. Press . in that popup and a drop down menu of matching
files will be shown.

Thank you, that indeed worked. But it also firmly convinced me that I better
stick to C-x C-f and C-x d ;-).
