Yes, when I said `read_char' I didn't mean it literally.  Some nearby
function (such as kbd_buffer_get_event) may be better suited.

BTW, hopefully making such a change would allow us to handle the funny X11
keysyms of the form "Unnnn" for unicode char "nnnn".
