Just an idea: how about filling such gaps with the following colors?
* Default background
- Leftmost left scroll bars in frames with no left fringe
- Rightmost right scroll bars in frames with no right fringe
* Fringe background
- Leftmost left scroll bars in frames with left fringe
- Rightmost right scroll bars in frames with right fringe
* Vertical-border foreground
- Otherwise
A kind of "retouched" screenshot is attached. The default
vertical-border foreground might be too strong for this case.
