Since I raised this question, I want to make clear that I was worried not by the meaning of these error messages, but by the clutter they produce in the gdb window. And now a new 4-line explanation just added more clutter :-) A proper analogy for the reaction to gdb error messages are -Wno-pointer-sign compiler warnings. Nobody worries about them, but everyone wants to get rid.
