eventually figured out the cause of the bug: it's not
Mac-specific; it's idiot-specific, to this particular idiot. I
was installing Emacs
20.0.50.1 via darwinports, and failed to notice
that the emacs-devel portfile specifies -D20051018 as an argument to
the cvs checkout command. When I removed this the problem
disappeared. So it appears to be an old emacs bug (nothing to do
with AUCTeX, and probably nothing to do with OS X either) that's
already fixed in current cvs. Thank you for your reply, and
apologies for my stupidity.
