I believe that you misunderstood. I do not believe that Uwe was
talking about indentation at the beginning of a line. He was talking
about _trailing_ whitespace.
I was thinking about trailing whitespace after point, which RET would
put into the second line. TAB would make that irrelevant.
I did not think of the case of trailing whitespace before point.
