I did this because it turns out to be useful.
If a specific caller wants some other mode, it's easy to switch.
So this causes no problem.
My point was that the doc says nothing about it, giving the impression that
it is general.
It IS general, it just has a default that isn't what you expected.
I agree that should be documented. Would someone like to do that?
