facemenu-color-alist is a variable defined in `facemenu.el'.
Its value is nil
Documentation:
Alist of colors, used for completion.
If null, `facemenu-read-color' will set it.
I don't see this, either in the code or in practice. It never seems to
get set, beyond nil.
You're right, and that was true in version 21 also.
So this variable only has an effect if you set or bind it.
