At least, configure could hide the absense of this script.
There is no mention of gnome-config in configure. It must be your local
setup. Did you specify which pkg-config to use? It may be pkg-config that
needs gnome-config. What does the line before "checking for alsa" say? It
should say "checking for pkg-config... " and then yes or no.
