So this would indicate that the problem is specific to Cygwin.

I see several possible ways to try to resolve this:

 . Ask on the Cygwin mailing list if someone knows about this problem
   and its reason(s);

I tried that.  nothing useful out of that.


 . Try upgrading to a newer version of Cygwin or downgrading to an
   older one, and see if that helps;

I tried both, doesnt help


 . Post here the results of running ./configure; perhaps we should try
   various options related to memory allocation and see if any of them
   solve the problem.

OK, will do this shortly. however, is it also possible that one needs some cygwin-specific code, or perhaps this is a bug in an existing cygwin-specific code?
