The doc string for `call-interactively' says that the third arg is, by default, the value of (this-command-keys), which sometimes returns a string and sometimes a vector. According to the manual, it returns "a string if all events in the sequence were characters that fit in a string."
However, `call-interactively' barfs if this third arg is a string. emacs -Q M-: (call-interactively 'ignore nil "^M") ; where ^M is input by C-q C-m gives an error (wrong-type-argument vectorp " ") It should work with string args also, because a typical use might be to save the value of (this-command-keys) at some point, and then use it later with `call-interactively'. (Although `this-command-keys-vector' could be used instead.) If it is decided that it should not work with strings, then the doc string and manual need to be corrected to not give the impression that it should.
