    the thing read certainly should *not* be evaluated.

Certainly, but that is not the question.  The question is whether to
use read-expression-history and read-expression-map.  What do you
think about that?

i'm am leaning towards a modest "yes".  i see interactive entry of the
exposure spec to be infrequent, but it may be that on those occasions
where someone is entering it, they would want to be able to tinker by
recalling and adjusting one from history.  the history mechanisms
would be useful, then.

is that helpful?  am i even understanding the question, now?
