Hi,

I never did that in the past, so I cannot ensure you I did it
the perfect way. So that you can judge by yourself, this is what
I did:

On top of these default packages in Ubuntu, I installed:

        build-essential
        libgtk2.0-dev

Then, from the CVS Emacs directory, I ran the following commands:

        ./configure --with-x-toolkit=gtk --with-xft=yes
        make bootstrap
        make
        sudo make install

After that, I could successfully launch a newly built Emacs app:

        GNU Emacs 22.0.92.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.6)
        of 2007-01-16 on mundaneum

But I still get exactly the same problematic behavior with the
colors that are not displayed anymore, neither in the Gnus Group
buffer nor in the `list-colors-display' buffer, as within all
the Emacs 22+ versions I've used so far.

Thank you very much in advance for any further help you could
bring me with! Don't hesitate to ask me for other tests, or
things to try or send you.

For your information, here the new Emacs environment I've built:

    In GNU Emacs 22.0.92.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.6)
     of 2007-01-16 on mundaneum
    X server distributor `The X.Org Foundation', version 11.0.70101000
    configured using `configure '--with-x-toolkit=gtk' '--with-xft=yes''
