ok, this time using the right binary, and still getting the same message: ** (emacs:1551): WARNING **: failure: no device event controller found.
this occurs frequently, for example when loading GNUS, where there should be no sound events although there would be one IMAP call; before GNUS completely loads, I get about a dozen occurences of this message to the stderr in the terminal window that launched emacs. there is nothing suspicous in the *Messages* (posted below debug info) however, there _is_ something wrong with alsaplay: $ alsaplay /usr/share/sounds/fx/buzz.wav AlsaPlayer 0.99.53 (C) 1999-2001 Andy Lo A Foe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and others. I could not find a suitable output module on your system. Make sure they're in "/usr/lib/alsaplayer/output/". Use the -o parameter to select one. failed to load output add-on. Exiting... so perhaps this really is an ALSA issue. I'll look into that -- sound appears to work fine, but clearly alsaplay does not DEBUG INFO: In GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.11) of 2007-05-18 on maya.teledyn.com Windowing system distributor `The X.Org Foundation', version 11.0.70200000 configured using `configure '--prefix=/usr' '--with-x' '--with-x-toolkit=gtk'' Important settings: value of $LC_ALL: nil value of $LC_COLLATE: en value of $LC_CTYPE: en_CA value of $LC_MESSAGES: en_CA value of $LC_MONETARY: en_CA value of $LC_NUMERIC: en_CA value of $LC_TIME: en_CA value of $LANG: en_CA locale-coding-system: iso-8859-1 default-enable-multibyte-characters: t Major mode: Summary Minor modes in effect: delete-selection-mode: t pc-selection-mode: t display-time-mode: t shell-dirtrack-mode: t tooltip-mode: t tool-bar-mode: t mouse-wheel-mode: t menu-bar-mode: t file-name-shadow-mode: t global-font-lock-mode: t font-lock-mode: t blink-cursor-mode: t unify-8859-on-encoding-mode: t utf-translate-cjk-mode: t auto-compression-mode: t line-number-mode: t transient-mark-mode: t Recent input: <help-echo> M-x g n u s <return> <down-mouse-1> <mouse-2> C-n SPC <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <help-echo> <menu-bar> <help-menu> <report-emacs-bug> Recent messages: Loading subst-gb2312...done Loading subst-big5...done Loading subst-jis...done Parsing BBDB...
