Hm.  I just tested this but couldn't reproduce the problem.  I said
C-x d /r:grossjoh@marcy:/tmp/ RET, created a file foo in that
directory, then used C-x 4 d ~/tmp/junk/ RET, then `R' to rename the
file foo from the remote host to ~/tmp/junk.  Worked like a charm.

I'm sorry to say that I can't reproduce the problem.  Do you still
have it?  What can I do to reproduce it?
