This is one of the most utterly idiotic things about Mail.

If you disable indexing of messages in the Spotlight preference pane, to avoid 
the extremely inconvenient side effect Marc noted, then even *Mail* can no 
longer search based on the contents of the mail.

And worse, it just pretends there are no matches. So lame.

(Actually I haven't verified this since 10.6 came out, because I long ago 
resigned to just giving up and accepting the fact that Spotlight is a great 
technology that for some reason has the worst UI ever created since humans 
learned to chisel rocks. But I bet it is still true.)
