I was out of real arguments. I just have that baaad feeling that you can't explain about the splitter in the source list. I think I might even prefer pane switch using buttons in the status bar. I think it basically boils down to the fact that having both panes at half height is awful when you're doing stuff with the two. Now consider the two are rather long, and have scrollbars.
