Yes, but then you are playing by the rules of IMAP. At least for half of your stuff. So you need to know the rules and implement them correctly :D

If Letters is going to be an IMAP program, I agree with John Welch. Make a rock solid IMAP client, and layer on the goodies on top of that, some of which might not transfer to other programs (client side filters for example). John might disagree with me, but an option is to make it essentially only an offline IMAP client like most other clients. The other is to offer that mode and offer a no-cache option too.
