There are many more or less compatible and entertaining stories around the name and current logo and their meanings. Yet, if Apple definitely asked Apple Records permission to use their name, it doesn't mean that's where they got the idea (anybody would have been tempted to flatter them by pretending to be fans, this being right or wrong). BTW, let's not bring to Mr Paley's attention such obvious added connection between Apple and those dangerous leftist activists :-) One of the alleged stories is that Wozniak was eating an apple the day they had to register the name and Jobs decided that if they didn't come up with a better idea in time... But still, before being replaced with the bitten logo created by Regis McKenna for the presentation of the Apple ][, the first one by early associate Ronald Gerald Wayne was about knowledge, but no byte (which seems to have become necessary as a non-bitten striped Apple would rather look like a very strange tomato on drugs). And the Eve thing did fit perfectly. Sorry if I sound serious, but we in France just had a very bad surprise, as the FN (nationalist and xenophobic party) just passed the first turn of the presidential election (we elect our presidents ourselves, in 2 turns, with only 2 candidates in the 2nd), because of many concurring circumstances (the media had been pretending for monthes that the results were obvious, which led to 30% of the people not bothering to vote before the 2nd turn, which had nether happened, whereas the 16 candidates represented more distinct political tendancies than ever; most main candidates based their campaign on fear, which was advertisement for the FN; and, that's the connection with the above, the FN candidate pretended until the end that he wasn't sure he could get enough mayors' signatures to present his party because of a conspiracy, which was obviously false --each candidate has to provide 500 signatures of supporting mayors, to prevent total bonkers from showing up). Our country is so marvelously lay (I didn't know the term and idea existed in English until now), that even our right-wing extremists are only religious in private, yet they're terrifying. Here's how he concluded his speech (after "don't be afraid" etc.): "We're socially of the left, economically of the right, and before all nationally of France", which at first appeared to me as a skilful way of saying they're national-socialists without sounding too frightening and to seduce the poor (whereas there's nothing socially leftist in their program, which is a logical consequence of being economically rightist).
