Man have I been laid out. At least my Mac has. Whew. I just finished putting in a new IDE card and a new Maxtor IDE drive, and a new Sony IDE internal burner. I thought I was going to loose all that I had, really. I was starting to wonder if I had some sort of malicious virus. I still don't really know why it happended. The first thing I did was to install a SIIG ATA 133 card in my 7600. I kept my stock SCCI HD to format from with 8.6. And something went Oh so wrong. I had over lapping files out the wazzoo. And twice one of the new partitions decided that it was now unrecognizable and MUST be initialized. Fortunatly I was able to keep just one move ahead of the disaster. I finally borrowed an old 13 gig IDE drive from my brother. Then I zeroed it out, low level wipe, and did a clean install of system 9.1 (newly purchased) I was able to pull everything I had onto the 13 gig and zero out low level all my regular drives, even the new Maxtor drive. I have been sweating this for about 2 weeks now and just this morning I think I have now turned the corner and stability has now returned.
I mention this here becasue of the discussion about viri, and becasuse I have lost a few strainge things here and there. One of the things I lost was Emailers dictionary. I can't find it anywhere and the spell checker won't work anymore (which is REAALLY bad for me). Does anyone know where I can check for certain for the emailer dictionary? What exactly is it's name? Where exactly should it be found? I also wanted to say that I also downloaded that new patch for OE. But now I have discovered Opera. And Opera rocks. Yes it has a fee after 30 days but hell, I use the browsewr so much why not put $40 on having the best? And to that comment, does anyone know bad or good about Opera? I sure like what I see so far. How about it's securety? I know someone will say it so I will mention that DiskWarrior, normally a favorite of mine, did almost nothing to pull me out of this one. I let it run for 14 hours at one point and it was counting 3000+ overlapping files on my drive. At that point I stopped it and tried again another way. I have lost some preferences, all of my internet bookmarks, emailers dictionary and Nisus had to be reinstalled. Other than that I am still assessing the damage but it looks like I will have most of my stuff intact. Man, that was rough. It's good to be back.
