I hope this response does not contribute to a flame war. Those are sad
displays of lack of something or other that is important to being an adult.

                                Short Answer
My "short list," in order of preference, is:
  - PowerMail
  - Entourage
  - Eudora

I love to save a buck as much as the next person but the relatively small
cost of an email client (<$60US) is not crucial to me in the larger picture
-- I firmly believe there are times when a free product is the most
expensive product.

                                Longer Answer

I am not frustrated, just saddened. I still love Emailer. My feeling is
akin to selling a beloved roadster because it is not appropriate for
transporting aging family members grocery shopping or small children to
sports and lessons.

Why am I leaving Emailer then? I want to operate only in OS X (i.e.,
nothing at all to be run in Classic) and am moving in that direction.

Leaving Emailer means I am leaving behind the wonderful email client I have
vociferously defended and advocated since first purchasing it from the hand
of Guy Kawasaki many years ago.

Apart from IMAP (which is just not very relevant to me though it can be I
suppose) Emailer, for me
  - does everything any other email client can do,
  - does everything that is important to me,
  - does some things more readily than any other email client (yes, this is
subjective on my part), and
  - does everything needed to enable AppleScript to contribute to my use of
email (at least to the extent I am able to understand and use AppleScript)
.

Emailer has stood me in good stead in OS 7 & 8 & 9; with machines from our
original SE through a 5300 & a LC II & a 6100 & (presently) iMac SE DV
(nominally G3/400, 256 MB RAM, 2 external FireWire hard drives) and soon, I
plan, to some sort of G4, hopefully a mini-tower. All the while it has an
elegance that is a true benchmark of software development.

My decision to move to the world of OS X (exclusively I hope) has many
aspects. Some of these are professional and some are a belief that life
moves on -- people using 68K Macs had to face the fact at some point that
all development and progress was being made in PowerPC technology. Now the
same is happening with OS X. Some people will "stand pat" with what their
Macs presently can do in OS 9, choosing not to be interested in what is and
will be available in OS X and beyond -- that is their right but I choose
not to be one of them.

As an aside, I feel that the small but vocal criticism that OS X is "too
complicated" for most Mac users is pure hogwash! ANY different OS
challenges new users at first and some people seem to never get over it --
I know people who are Apple ][ experts and aficionados, they still fume and
fulminate about their 68K Macs.

I am presently using Mail which is part of OS X. I am finding it quite
unsatisfactory and am anxious to try something else.

I have been checking out PowerMail and will soon be test-driving it.

If (please note I said "if") I acquire MS Office X, I will immediately take
a very close look at Entourage. I would like to favor it because of its Mac
roots with the likes of Jud Spencer and others being the designers and
engineers.

To repeat about Emailer, I am saddened but I am not frustrated.

Best regards,
