My 2 pennies - While I believe that there are consumer friendly govt agencies and supportive laws that can be enacted, it really comes down to, "me". I appreciate the knowledgeable responses on this list as to why something works or why it might not. All good data. But I observe that there is a sort of social malaise that has broadly taken over at least the current American society. The unthinkable has become, and is becoming, more and more thinkable, and doable. And so I gravitate toward doing what I can to protect my own privacy. I routinely get evening calls, even after 8 PM soliciting contributions or marketing credit cards, etc. They don't seem to mind calling at dinner time anymore. Or at least, they don't apologize for such behavior anymore. In fact, a polite "no thanks I am in a meeting, or at dinner, or not available right now," almost always gets more conversation. They are now "handling" my objections as though I were a sales "target" instead of listening to me, a bonafide human being. An image comes into my mind of the old Fuller Brush Man stereo type. The guy who sticks his foot in your door when you open it and doesn't take no for an answer. It is that mentality that I am sensing more of when I refer to a general sense of social malaise. In particular it is that foot in the door type of spam that I hate. As I see it, this is a part of the (American society) trend for what I refer to as "LCD TV". By that I mean Least Common Denominator TV. Television that appeals to the most base instincts and does nothing to elevate thought or nobility or kindness or.. anything socially positive. Now don't get me wrong, I Like a good action picture like Arnold or Clint or Steve Segal makes. But the LCD stuff that is just about people ratting on each other, seeing who is this weeks "looser" in some sort of survivor game, to see who is the moron that is the weakest link, the cop shows that increase out fascination with a traffic stop and make traffic pile up for hours while we all drive slowly, voyeristically, to see a real live version of the cop or trauma show. And the talking heads news anchors are not much different IMHO. News about disasters lead and in some cases, become the sole news fed to the networks. The BBC isn't perfect but sometimes I see stories there that were never shown on the US nets. My friend, who's opinions a greatly respect, says that their telemarketing calls went way, way down after installing their telezapper. And when I have called them, and the beep always occurs, it has never felt too loud or obnoxious. Quite tolerable really. Certainly it sounds not as harsh as a Fax tone. More like a very mild answering matching beep. (Some answering machines get a little too harsh IMHO) So bottom line is, it seems to work, and work well.
