Um, hmmm... Maybe it doesn't work now, though I could swear it did at one time... no time to test it my self just now. As for why...? For all the reasons you gave for keeping document files separated from the application itself. It's simply another method that often works when the software expects data files to be in a particular place... and that particular place ain't where *you* want 'em.
