I think the Command-K only tells it to bring up the connect window, which then lets you send/recieve. Are you sure the correct accounts are checked off for those that you are sending email from? It will only operate the accounts checked in the list (you can tell which have mail waiting to be sent as it puts a count of emails next to the name).
