Hello fellow Claris Emailers,

I installed PowerMail 4.0.1 yesterday to check it out. When I find the
time and cash to upgrade to MacOS X, I will definitely use PowerMail.
Until then, however, I'm going to stick with MacOS 9.2, use Emailer and
Baton Mail, and save the $49.

The pluses of PowerMail include the following:
- Mail is sent as plain text, not HTML.
- Mail can be read as plain text or as HTML. When messages are read with
the HTML reader and if there are any links to graphics in the message,
there is a setting to view them or not view them.
- While PowerMail doesn't include a spell checker, an external spell
checker can be configured to be used by PowerMail.
- The GUI reminds me a lot of Emailer.
- Don't need to use Baton Mail. It provides SMTP authentication.

The minuses include the following:
- Attachments are not imported from Emailer, at least using the Apple
Event importer. Since PowerMail uses an Attachments folder similar to
Emailer's Downloads folder, I would have expected (liked) the importer to
at least indicate that the original message had attachments and point to
the Attachments folder.
- Based on my limited tests, imported messages from Emailer no longer
indicate the account that messages were sent to or by. This, of course,
isn't an issue if you have a few accounts. But when you have numerous
accounts like me, this is quite important.
- When working on a new message, there is no magnifying glass icon or
plus icon to add addresses from the Address Book. You have to open the
Address Book and drag-and-drop the addresses. You can alternatively type
in the receipt's name just like in Emailer.
- No way to import Emailer Mail Actions into PowerMail Filters. Since I
have numerous Mail Actions that are quite extensive, it's going to be a
pain to re-create these in PowerMail.

Other than the above, that's all I've found...so far. I'm guessing that
when I do move to MacOS X, I'll import my Address Book from Emailer into
PowerMail, but not the messages. I'll use Emailer as an archive for all
of my old email messages.

Larry
