I recently upgraded our (lombard? 266/G3/no firewire or USB) powerbook
with a G4/500 processor and 512 megs of Ram -
total cost ~$450
accelerator - $350 - powerlogix G4/500 (from Otherworld computing
[www.macsales.com])
memory ~$100 from www.memorytogo.com
while it has not yet receved much use, there is DEFIANTELY a serious
speed improvement in what as been done on it so far. It also does not
have X on it - but, supposedly with a small bit of software it will run X.
