You guessed right.

If you have to manually stich this together, then it doesn't matter to
#1, and Yes to #2.

Well, it really depends on how the PDF was split.

Before you go thru all the effort, did you get 16 little attachments? Or
just 16 emails with encoded text in them. If you got 16 little
attachments, select them all and drop them onto Stuffit Expander (if you
don't have it, you can get a free version from www.aladdinsys.com).

If you have 16 emails with encoded text in them, then save all as text
(via the file menu), and then drop all on Stuffit Expander. If that
doesn't work, download a copy of UUcd (check versiontracker.com). When
you drop them on UUcd, it will decode them all, and give you the chance
to rearrange the parts into order (if you didn't select them in order in
the first place). Then you can save the final file.

And worst case, you are stuck putting them together manually using
BBEdit, then drop the resulting file on anything able to decode Base64
(stuffit expander is the easiest on the Mac... UUcd is probably the best
in my opinion however, it tends to decode stuff that Stuffit can't, but
you can really use any app you want that can decode Base64)
