Yes!  This IS quite true.  Poor old DiskWarrior worked continuously on my 
hard drive for over two days before the finder ran out of memory, which 
was the final straw before re-initialization.  DW would have had the 
problem fixed pronto had not Norton already messed up the directory file 
in Norton's unsuccessful attempt to fix the original directory file.  
Backups are indeed important.  (My problem was that my backup hard drive 
coincidentally crashed within two days of  my original drive -- bad luck 
trumped everything!)
