In my case, the dialog box would appear along with the other startup 
items.  The dialog box would say that there was a QuickTime update 
available, and would ask me if I wanted to get it now.  If I clicked 
YES, the download would never begin, and the dialog box would return 
on the next reboot.  If I clicked NO, the system would lock up. I was 
also able to ignore the dialog box and try to work, but that wasn't 
practical because it stayed on top and obscured stuff beneath it.  

After trying a bunch of stuff, a reinstallation of QuickTime solved 
the problem.
