Actually, if you had CE open to the browser (rather than an individual email), if he hit the delete key several times and the arrow keys, he could have possibly done it. One thing that for me has been a plus (until I read your story) was that if I want to delete a message sitting in the folder pane of the browser window (e.g., the InBox), all I have to do is highlight it and hit delete two times (first time brings up the delete dialog, and if you hit the delete key, it will delete whatever you had selected).
Good thing you had the backup. Better yet that you found your folder - sounds like he was playing with the mouse or trackpad instead, at least.
