You are 100% correct that the problem was with a bad message still on the
server.

The reason the message kept coming back down to you is because you have
messages saved on the server AND Emailer was unsuccessful in unpacking
the message. When saving messages on the server, the message is not
considered received by Emailer until it has been successfully unpacked
and added to the mail database.

So since it was crashing before that last step was complete, Emailer had
no record of the message, so on its next connection, would download the
message again as it thought it was new.

By turning off the store on server, you alter the way Emailer considers a
message to be received. When NOT storing messages on the server, Emailer
considers the message to be read as soon as it is downloaded, regardless
of if it is successfully unpacked. So by turning that off, you collected
the message one last time, crashed Emailer, deleted the message by hand,
and then all was well going forward from there as the message was now
also gone from the server.

In the future, if you want to store messages on the server AND get around
a problem like this, use something like Mail Siphon to log into the
server and delete the bad message there. That way Emailer won't get stuck
in this loop of downloading and crashing.
