 Why not? The thing is that if you buy what you think is enough and you 
suddenly realize you need more, because you get a new app or start 
working on bigger files or whatever, you'll have to get a bigger memory 
chip, which means you have to get a new chip *and* get rid of the old 
one. That's a lot of work to save $50. It's a better to purchase a little 
more than what you need and have room for growth.

I still contend that 512 MB still *guarantees* a better experience of OS 
X. Have any idea how much RAM the window manager takes? If your comps 
video card does NOT support Quartz Extreme, surplus RAM can make up for 
some (but not all) of that performance loss. (Quartz Extreme supported 
video cards speed up screendrawing under OS X)
