That's a lot of work to save $50. It's a better to purchase a little more than what you need and have room for growth.
I still contend that 512 MB still *guarantees* a better experience of OS X. Have any idea how much RAM the window manager takes? If your comps video card does NOT support Quartz Extreme, surplus RAM can make up for some (but not all) of that performance loss.
