Chris, Get out your knife and rip that goat from limb to limb... and... Try disabling the Toast CD Reader extension.
I had a similar looney "won't read" problem with just one commercial CD (reputedly the first music CD ever issued), which would freeze up my whole 9600 until I ejected the CD.
