Another way to do "hot links" is with Apple Data Detectors.  
It's a system enhancement that provides a contextual menu, 
identifying links and giving a list of choices about which 
to open and how to open it.  For instance, you could control 
swipe-highlight a paragraph full of links, and Apple Data 
Detectors will present them all in a contextual menu.  It 
also recognizes email addresses and other sorts of data.  
A bit old, but possibly worth playing with.
