Jobs did have a funeral for OS 9. OS 9 is no longer being developed. Bugs
will not be fixed, no versions beyond 9.2.2 will be issued. No future
software releases by Apple will function in OS 9.

OS X is also standalone. New Macs don't boot in anything but OS X, and
from what I understand, OS 9 is no longer bundled with OS X. (however I
think new macs still come with the ability to install OS 9 from their
restore CD).

HOWEVER, this has no bearing on Classic existing in OS X. Classic is
basically a Mac Emulator that lets you run OS 9 in its own virtual
computer. Classic is still to the best of my knowledge being developed.
